Calculate the Pasadena parking screen

Pasadena’s ADU page describes a general requirement of one parking space per unit or per bedroom, whichever is less, and lists exceptions. The examples include qualifying transit access, an existing structure conversion, certain historic or car-share circumstances, and an ADU proposed with the primary dwelling. Confirm the exact exception and its current definitions rather than relying on a nearby transit stop or a general description.

Pasadena’s current ADU guidance says replacement parking is not required when an existing garage, carport, or surface space serving as required parking for the primary dwelling is demolished or converted in conjunction with construction or conversion of an ADU. Check that the removed space and project meet those stated conditions. This replacement-parking rule is separate from the ADU’s own parking requirement and does not decide driveway legality or emergency access.

Review driveway and emergency access separately

Pasadena’s guidance discusses driveway and site conditions as separate checks. It limits when a second driveway may be created and describes an alley-related condition. Confirm the current standard, lot frontage, existing driveway, and any fire or water-code review with the City. A parking count does not establish that a driveway is permitted or that emergency access is acceptable.

Use the City’s current ADU page, zoning text, and parcel-specific map or review. Keep the source and date checked with the site plan, and obtain City confirmation for any exception that depends on location or project type. For a general comparison method, see ADU parking requirements and waivers; for route legality and fire review, see lanes, alleys, driveways, and fire access.
