ADU Parking Requirements: How to Check Local Rules
Find the authority, rule, and project-specific conditions that determine whether an accessory dwelling unit needs parking or qualifies for an exemption.
Rulebook topic
Check parking rules, site access, utility capacity, drainage, rural services, and other site conditions that can affect an accessory dwelling unit.
A secondary dwelling can be allowed by zoning and still need a workable parking arrangement, safe access, utility upgrades, drainage measures, or approval from another service authority. These questions depend on the property, the dwelling type, and the rules in force when you apply.
Start with the authority that controls the specific question. A city may set parking and site rules, while a fire service, water provider, electric utility, health authority, or conservation body handles a separate part of the project. A published service area or parking exemption does not establish that a particular lot has capacity or approval.
Confirm the current rule with the responsible authority and apply it to the actual parcel and project design. These guides explain what to investigate; they do not establish a property’s eligibility, service capacity, permit outcome, or fire acceptance.
